Your cart is your meal plan. If the food's not in the house, it's not going on the plate. Use this list as your weekly default. Pick a few items from each category, lean on what you actually like to eat, and stop trying to reinvent it every week.

Prices are rough U.S. national averages (mid-2025) and will vary by store, region, and season. Treat them as planning estimates, not guarantees.

5 Rules That Make the List Work

  • Shop the outside of the store first. Produce, meat, dairy, then aisles for staples.
  • Always leave with a clear protein source for every meal of the week.
  • Buy frozen vegetables and fruit in bulk. Same nutrition, less waste, ready in minutes.
  • Pre-cook one large batch of rice or potatoes and one large batch of protein every Sunday.
  • Stock 2-3 protein snacks at home, in your car, and at work. Hunger is not a willpower problem.
